2021 Fall Virtual Wildflower Pilgrimage (FvWFP) iNaturalist Event

This event has now passed
Welcome to our second annual Fall Virtual Wildflower Pilgrimage (beyond the GSMNP)! It will once again be held through the iNaturalist app. We will not limit this year’s event to the confines of the GSMNP, nor is it ever limited to just wildflowers as the name suggests, but instead we will expand it throughout the entire country, Canada, and anywhere else our pilgrims happen to be. So, no matter where you live or what organisms you have in your backyards, neighborhoods, parks or outdoor areas you may safely visit, you can share them with all of us! Furthermore, we will have some evening classes on how to use iNaturalist for beginners or experts, if you choose to attend.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE. In order to make it an “exclusive” SWFP- and ASB-family event, we need your iNaturalist usernames. First, download the iNaturalist app (free and reputable - created by the California Academy of Sciences) and then create a username. If you make it something recognizable (close to your name) then your friends, fellow pilgrims, leaders, and ASB members will more easily recognize who you are, but if you prefer anonymity, that is OK too! We will send out an email to all closer to the event to explain the registration process.
WHEN AND WHAT? Starting October 9, 2021 at 8:00 AM Eastern the Annual Fall Virtual Wildflower Pilgrimage iNaturalist event will begin and it will run through October 17 at midnight. Through the week you all can add observations (pictures, sound recordings, etc) of all of the usual groups of organisms that you would normally get to see during the pilgrimage – wildflowers, trees, ferns, mosses, insects, spiders, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, or anything else!!! PICTURES MUST BE TAKEN DURING THE TIME FRAME OF THE EVENT, otherwise they will not upload to the project. Not only can you make and add observations, but pilgrims, leaders, ASB biologists, and park officials will be able to help identify the organisms and provide some chat and discussion! You do not need to know what the organisms are to participate. At a very basic level, all you have to do is take a few pictures of a plant, animal, fungus, or whatever and upload it to our iNaturalist project. Other people will help you learn what it is! Alternatively, if you already know what it is, then you can upload pics and give others the opportunity to learn! ALL OBSERVATIONS MUST HAVE BEEN MADE DURING THE WEEK OF THE EVENT OTHERWISE THEY WILL NOT UPLOAD TO THE PROJECT. |
2021 Virtual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage (SvWFP)
iNaturalist Event
May 8 - 16, 2021
The Virtual Spring event was a huge success! During the week, we made 11,729 observations of 2,882 species (which is still growing as more observations are identified). We documented 1,910 species of plants, 348 insects, 157 birds, 58 spiders, 42 reptiles, 36 amphibians, 36 mammals, 29 mollusks, and 128 fungi. Thank you for your energy, curiosity, good-natured competition, eagerness to learn, and willingness to teach. We're excited to do it again in the Fall!
