Join us on iNaturalist

No experience is necessary to participate in this citizen science platform!  Your involvement is a critical component to research in GSMNP. Park managers use data from this platform for a variety of research and monitoring projects. For example, previous years' iNaturalist observations are being used to map distributions of vulnerable populations in the Smokies. Please consider participating on iNaturalist by uploading observations of organisms you see during Pilgrimage and throughout the year .
About iNaturalist:
iNaturalist observations have been used by Park Scientists to create models to better understand the distribution of different species in the Park. Please come to the Pilgrimage prepared to help the Park collect even more data by downloading the iNaturalist app or register for one of our iNaturalist training programs!

New to iNaturalist?
Create an account at iNaturalist.org. We recommend using the mobile app in the field, especially with limited cell service. Then, join our project by searching for "
Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage" (2026 Project coming soon). An iNaturalist Project is a way to group a set of observations, like those taken in a certain geographic area or during a specific timeframe. Practice creating an observation by taking a photo, making an identification (or your best guess), and sharing it to the community. It is best to allow the app to gather location data, so that observations are georeferenced; however, you can also set locations to 'private' or 'obscured' to protect your privacy. You can also upload observations after you return from a hike because most cellphone photos store geolocation information.
